Knoxfield backyard swaps tired artificial turf for TifTuf Bermuda

Knoxfield homeowner turned a degraded, weed infested artificial lawn into a soft, natural outdoor space the whole family can enjoy. With the old turf and gravel underlay removed, a fresh 100mm layer of top dressing spread, and 69 square metres of TifTuf Bermuda laid down in October 2025, the backyard now has a lush, low maintenance lawn built to last.

Turning vision into reality

With 69 square metres to work with, the goal for this Knoxfield backyard was a clean, natural lawn to replace the ageing artificial turf. TifTuf Bermuda was the natural fit, delivering a fine, dense, soft surface that suits a compact backyard well while standing up to full sun without losing its colour.

Richard's brief was to upgrade the landscape with a soft, natural lawn. The previous owners had installed artificial turf, which had degraded and become infested with weeds over time. The goal was a lush, natural lawn that looked great and felt good underfoot for everyday family life.

A total of 69 square metres of TifTuf Bermuda was supplied for this project. After researching several turf varieties, TifTuf came out on top for its ability to retain a lush green appearance in hot, sunny weather while staying soft to walk across. Richard also visited Lilydale Instant Lawn in person to discuss lawn types, maintenance, and supply before making the decision.

The main challenge on this project was removing the existing artificial turf. The old surface was industrial grade and sand ridden, requiring two strong workers, an excavator, and large crowbars to lift and roll it up. Once removed, the gravel underlay was also disposed of and a fresh 100mm layer of top dressing was spread in preparation for the new turf.
