As much as we love our pets, they can be demanding, can’t they? Some need hours of enrichment time, regular exercise, pH-neutral dechlorinated water, specialist diets… but we do it because we love them. But do they need a certain type of grass? Well, some types are better than others.

We’ve curated the best lawn grasses for dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and all of Melbourne’s pets that love a little backyard playtime.

What makes the best grass for dogs and other pets?

We’ll focus on dogs because, generally speaking, if a grass can withstand the stress of a dog, then any other pet will be a piece of cake. Here are the qualities that make our Victorian-grown grasses ideal for pets:

• Low allergy: pet-friendly grasses need soft, fine leaves that don’t have sharp ridges that can scratch and irritate dogs with allergies.
• Self-repairing: dogs love to dig, scratch and run. You’ll need a densely rooted grass that can quickly repair holes and tears on its own, saving you the trouble and expense.
• Natural grass: most importantly, you need real grass. Artificial turf might seem like a low-maintenance option, but natural grass is safer, healthier, easier to clean and far more fun for your dogs to get their zoomies out on.
