How to install QWELTS for a perfect lawn
What are QWELTS, and why use them?
Our goal is to give you the healthiest grass possible and make it as easy to install as possible — after all, what’s the point of buying premium grass if it’s going to wilt the second you lay it? That’s why we’ve developed our QWELTS harvesting technique.
QWELTS are turf slabs. Unlike traditional turf rolls, QWELTS are quick to establish, water-efficient, and super easy to install, which is great if you're looking for a simple DIY project to spruce up your yard.
If you’re more of a visual learner, check out our video on what QWELTS are.

Step-by-step guide to installing QWELTS
Step 1: Prepare your lawn area thoroughly
Start by clearing your established lawn or space of any rocks, weeds, and bits and pieces. Use a rake to level out the soil, making it smooth and ready for your QWELTS. For better results, mix in some topsoil or a starter blend to give your lawn the best start. If you’re dealing with stubborn weeds, an all-purpose weed control will do the trick.
Step 2: Begin laying your QWELTS
Begin at a straight edge, like your driveway or fence line, and lay the QWELTS in a staggered pattern, kind of like laying bricks. Push each square tight against the next to make sure everything sits nicely with no gaps.
Step 3: Cut and shape as needed
Use a sharp knife to trim around garden beds, paths, or any curved bits. The handy size of QWELTS makes it easy to cut to fit into trickier spots, so no worries about odd shapes!
Step 4: Water immediately and maintain soil moisture
Once your QWELTS are down, give them a good soaking straight away to help the roots establish. Keep the soil nice and moist for the first couple of weeks, watering daily if needed. As your QWELTS take hold, start watering less often. A lawn soaker is perfect for this, as it waters evenly without wasting a drop.
Typically, you need to be extremely careful watering whilst instant lawn is fresh, to avoid washing away the actual soil it’s established in. One of the benefits of our thick-cut slabs is that even with heavy watering, you won’t have to worry about any turf loss.
Step 5: Ongoing care and maintenance
Keep an eye on your new lawn and start mowing once it’s rooted in well. Raise your mower blades a bit at first to avoid scalping the grass. Regularly fertilise and keep an eye out for pests — grub guard is great for tackling any nasties.
Tips for maintaining your QWELTS lawn
Regular watering schedule
Once established, switch to deep watering once or twice a week. This helps the roots grow deep and keeps your lawn strong, even in the heat.
Fertilising for optimal growth
Feed your QWELTS with a balanced fertiliser every couple of months to keep them lush and green. Regular feeding is key to a healthy lawn.
Proper mowing practices
Keep those mower blades sharp and mow to the right height for the season. Taller grass in summer helps protect the roots and conserves moisture.
Managing pests and weeds
Regular checks will help you keep on top of weeds and pests. To keep your lawn looking its best, use all-purpose weed control and grub guard.
Aeration and soil health
Give your lawn a breath of fresh air once a year with aeration. This helps reduce compaction and improves water and nutrient flow to the roots. Top-dressing with compost also boosts soil health.

Do QWELTS require special soil preparation?
Good soil prep makes all the difference. Level and enrich the soil with compost or a lawn starter to give your QWELTS a strong start. Well-drained and nutrient-rich soil is key.
How often should I water my new QWELTS lawn?
Initially, water every day for the first two weeks to keep the soil moist. After that, transition to a deep watering routine once or twice a week.
