How to prepare your lawn area

Prepare new1

1

Clear the area

Remove all existing grass, weeds, stones, and other debris. Roundup or Glyphosate can be sprayed on your existing grass 7 days prior to any soil cultivation.

Prep Soil

2

Prepare and work the soil

Prepare a base of 100 mm of well-worked soil. If your existing soil is suitable, this may be as simple as rotary hoeing the soil. If your existing soil is minimal or poor quality, you will need to apply blended soil mix evenly across the area. Your local garden supplier can advise you on the correct turf blend soil to use in your area.

3

Rake and level the area

To get the best results, rake the entire area to ensure a smooth, even surface. This will prevent lumps and divots in your lawn.

4

Measure the right depth

If you're laying turf next to paths and driveways, you need to make sure the soil is at the correct depth below the top of the path. That's 25mm for Sir Walter. 20mm for TifTuf, Sir Grange and Eureka

3

Place lawn slabs snugly

Place the lawn on the ground next to each other. Position them snugly but do not push them against each other too hard, as this can lift the turf and leave the root system without soil contact.

Your questions answered

If you’re not sure about the quality of your soil, it’s usually helpful to ask for advice at your local garden centre. They will be able to give you advice based on your location and they will be able to supply a soil mix for your turf if your current soil isn’t suitable.

Our Super Starter Pack is a unique mix of products designed to give your new lawn an immediate boost. It includes a good bacteria mix which keeps your soil healthy and wetting agents to help prevent your lawn from drying out. Simply add Super Starter Pack when you order your lawn online at checkout.

While it isn't complicated to lay your own turf, it does require manual labour to lift the grass slabs and lay them on the ground. You can help with laying your turf from a professional gardener or friends and family if laying your own turf is not physically accessible for you.

This depends on the turf variety and the time of year, but generally speaking it takes 3 to 6 weeks for your lawn to get established.
