Our specialists have cultivated three exceptional varieties that thrive in these challenging conditions:
- Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo needs 3-4 hours of direct sunlight per day: Known for its broad leaf and excellent shade tolerance, this grass thrives in up to 75% shade. It’s also low-maintenance and ideal for busy households.
- TifTuf Bermuda needs 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day: A fine-leaf turf with exceptional drought tolerance, TifTuf handles partial sun beautifully while staying lush and green. It’s perfect for high-traffic shady areas.
- Sir Grange Zoysia needs 3-4 hours of direct sunlight per day: This premium turf offers a fine, elegant leaf and thrives in partial sun, providing a luxurious finish for more open, landscaped spaces.

Our recommendations for growing grass in partial sun
While we offer four premium grass species, only three are well-suited to growing in mixed light. Their other attributes differ significantly, which we hope will make picking between them a little easier.
Sir Grange Zoysia grass is a partial-sun ornamental grass. Take note — like all ornamental grasses, it is purely decorative; it’s a stunning slow-growth beauty, but it cannot withstand any traffic.
TifTuf Bermuda, apart from being tolerant of partial sun, is also highly drought-tolerant and can withstand endless days of full sun the summer months bring — and it can do so with minimal yellowing.
Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo grass is our most shade-tolerant turf and is quite low maintenance to boot. No surprise here, but it’s one of the most popular lawn turf choices in Australia.

The best time to lay turf is during the springtime after the cool season, though Victoria’s spring is liable to bring clouds and rain as much as sunlight. Fortunately, our shade-tolerant grass will do well in those conditions. Better still, our QWELTS harvesting technique improves your turf's chances even more.
