Sir Walter –  Australia’s No.1 Buffalo Lawn is a creeping lawn that only creeps over the surface so it can be edged easily. Unlike other creeping grasses that can travel underground and are hard to keep out of the garden. Because it is a creeping grass it loves the summer but won’t do as well in the winter. However, in most cases it will retain some winter colour. This will improve with age. Sir Walter is extremely drought tolerant, grows well in the sun or dry lightly shaded areas, however, it grows better in the summer than the winter. Sir Walter will not like excessively damp conditions that are in a shaded environment.

Our Launcher Pack ($0.50 per square metre) contains a starter fertiliser, water crystals and liquid Seasol.
We recommend to purchase this pack to give added nutrients to the soil and turf and to help retain moisture near the root system whilst establishing root growth.

Sir Walter can be laid throughout the entire year, although it is only advisable to lay in winter in full sun.

Sir Walter Premium Lawn Turf is a warm season grass, it will stop growing during the winter months and may lose some colour.

Mowing Sir Walter is an easy task. The first mow can be undertaken as required. During the cooler months Sir Walter requires little mowing. During the warmer times, mowing may be necessary every two - three weeks. Sir Walter should be maintained at about 40mm to give a beautiful soft feel to the lawn. Never mow your Sir Walter under 40mm.

Once Sir Walter is established, it requires much less water than other varieties of turf. This is our most drought tolerant turf. Where Sir Walter is in a shady position, it should be kept longer at all times to allow more leaf growth to compensate for the lack of sunlight, and watered less frequently. In conditions where the soil is limited it may need more water. But generally a light water every fortnight would be adequate.

We recommend to fertilise your Sir Walter in September, December, March & again in April as a minimum.  Note: Fertiliser requirements vary depending upon the nutrient levels of your soil. For a premium result use Sir Walter Fertiliser every 8 weeks (except winter).

PREPARATION AND CARE

To prepare the area for your Sir Walter lawn you need to have a smooth base free of any grass matter or debris. It is important to have a well worked friable base on which to install your turf. This can be achieved by rotary hoeing if the existing soil is suitable or by the addition of topsoil if there is little or no useable soil. A depth of 100mm or more of suitable topsoil is required. Rake the entire area to ensure there is a smooth even surface, allowing about 25mm below paths and driveways for the thickness of the turf.

Apply your provided lawn starter or our Laucher Pack and begin laying your turf.  Start laying the turf along a straight edge, such as a driveway or footpath, furthest from the stack of turf. Therefore it won't be necessary to walk over any freshly laid lawn. The QWELTS should be laid in a brickwork pattern, ensuring all edges are butted and pushed together but not overlapping. The turf can be trimmed with a sharp knife to conform with paths and garden edges, etc.

For the best result it is recommened that once you lay your Sir Walter that you top dress it with white washed sand at approximately half a cubic metre per 100 square metres, concentrating on the joins to help stop the edges from drying out. You may also roll your turf after top dressing to achieve maximum soil contact.

It is essential that watering of Sir Walter commences immediately upon installation. A thorough soaking of the turf is required. For larger installations, watering should commence as sections are completed. It is vital that the turf is kept moist until root growth is established. This can be checked by lifting a small corner of a QWELT up, to ensure that water has thoroughly soaked the turf and sub soil. Once root growth has commenced watering can begin to be spaced.

Generally Sir Walter only needs to be fertilised in September, December, March & again in April. A maintenance feed during the summer will keep it strong and healthy.  For a premium result use Sir Walter Fertiliser every 8 weeks (except winter). Fertiliser requirements vary depending upon the nutrient levels of your soil.

Lilydale Instant Lawn offer a 10kg bucket of Sir Walter Fertiliser for $50.00. The 10kg bucket will fertilise approximately 400 square metres of turf. You are welcome to purchase the Sir Walter Fertiliser from our Yarra Glen farm or from our online store to have it delivered directly to your door (additional  charges will apply).

Mowing Sir Walter is an easy task. The first mow can be undertaken approximately 3 weeks after laying. We recommend to take one thrid of the leaf blade off every mow. During the warmer times mowing may be necessary every two-three weeks, however this will vary depending on how much you water it and the weather conditions. Sir Walter should be maintained at about 40mm to give a beautiful soft feel to the lawn. Never mow your Sir Walter under 40mm. During cooler months Sir Walter requires little or no mowing.

If you are putting your Sir Walter in a shady position it is advisable to mow it slightly higher, this will help compensate for the lack of sunlight.
